I Kings 17-18
/“How long will you waver between two opinions? If the Lord is God, follow him; but if Baal is God, follow him” (18:21). Elijah the prophet had no earthly power: no troops, no weapons, and only a few people left who were loyal to God. King Ahab had control of northern Israel, and he and Jezebel led the people in idol- worship. Despite that, Elijah believed in the Creator God (17:14), and he called on the people to reject all other sources of power and to give the Lord their exclusive loyalty.
“The Lord – he is God!” (18:39). Human leaders, armies, wealth, success – these ‘gods’ don’t listen or save (18:26). Only God in Christ is worthy of our highest love and allegiance.
