John 16-17

John 16 addresses two major themes: the necessity of Jesus going back to the Father so the Holy Spirit would come in a full way (vs 5-16), and our access to the Father in prayer because the Holy Spirit is given to us. John 17 reveals the eternal covenant between the Father and Son. Their purposes, including our knowing God, our being kept by Him, His Word being given to us, and our becoming one as believers together, just as the Father and Son are one, are the same.

The “together” of believers is not trivial; it is a high goal of heaven. It must be one for us also.
