1 Samuel 10-14

Saul, the first king of Israel, is an illustration that character and charisma are not the same. That one is effectively used by God is not an endorsement of character but of God’s sovereignty. God had given Israel a prophet, Samuel, but they wanted a king, so He chose one for them (10:17-24). Saul seemed humble (v22), but his humility proved to be shyness of personality, not character. His impetuosity and later disobedience showed an underlying arrogance and self-will. Yet God used him.

God will act according to His own character. “The Lord will not abandon His people on account of His great name; He has been pleased to make you a people for Himself,” (12:22). That is grace.
