I Samuel 19-20

“Go in peace, for we have sworn friendship with each other in the name of the Lord” (20:42). The bond between King Saul’s son Jonathan and David was more than friendship; they had sworn oaths of allegiance to one another that would affect their descendants. While Jonathan’s loyalty to David risked his own chance to be Israel’s next king, David risked trusting the son of the man who wanted to kill him. Their unwavering allegiance pointed to the loving faithfulness of God toward his people.

“But show me unfailing kindness like the Lord’s kindness as long as I live ...” (20:14). Human friendship and loyalty give us a glimpse of something even better: the unfailing love of our Lord.
