Psalm 135

“I know that the Lord is great, that our Lord is greater than all gods” (5). The psalmist saw God’s greatness in the fact that he chose Israel to be his “treasured possession” (4); the Creator generously revealed himself and came close to his people. He also “does whatever pleases him” (6): in heaven and earth, in blessing and justice (8-12). Our God is not like the idols who promise everything – satisfaction and power - but deliver nothing (15-18).

“Your name, Lord, endures forever” (13). If we chase after empty idols, we become “like them” (18). If we put our trust in the love, goodness, and wisdom of our God, we belong to him forever.
