Psalm 127-128

“Unless the Lord builds the house, the builders labor in vain” (127:1). The psalmist tells us that the good things we strive for in life like homes, work, and family (127:1-3; 128:2) can become empty, vain pursuits without the Lord. Work and its results (or spouses and children) become idols when we depend on them for value or identity, and pursuing success becomes a burden we can’t bear. But when we walk in obedience and fellowship with God (128:1), our lives become rooted in his purposes and his gifts become blessings (128:5).

“He grants sleep to those he loves” (127:2). Under God’s loving care, we can work hard and rest well, leaving ultimate results in his capable hands.
