Psalm 40-41

“He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; he set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand” (2). The troubles and disappointments of life had become a “slimy pit” for the psalmist. His own sinful choices, the attacks of others (12,14), and betrayal by so-called friends (41:9) conspired to drown him. When he stopped chasing false gods (4) and turned to the Lord, he found a firm and stable place to stand.

“Many, Lord my God, are the wonders you have done, the things you planned for us” (5). The Lord’s plans for us far outshine the “slimy pit” of life on our own terms.
