Isaiah 48-49

“It is too small a thing for you to be my servant to restore the tribes of Jacob ... I will also make you a light for the Gentiles” (49:6). Isaiah’s prophecy about God’s Servant who would restore the remnant of Israel declared that the Gentiles were also part of God’s plan. God’s covenant with Israel had always been about real trust in Him, not just “invoking” or “claiming” His name (48:1- 2). He would not forget His people or covenant (49:15) but instead bring a greater fulfillment than they had ever dreamed (49:8).

Babylonian captivity was terrible, but there was something worse. To Jews and Gentiles bound by sin, self-delusion and brokenness, the Messiah says, “Come out!” and “Be free!” (49:9).
